Result
After surgery there isn't usually significant discomfort; if there is, it can be lessened with the prescribed pain medication by your surgeon. (Severe or persistent pain or a sudden swelling of your face should be reported to your surgeon immediately.) Some numbness of the skin is quite normal; it will disappear in a few weeks or months. However, normal healing is a gradual process, with final results not fully realized for at least three weeks.
You will be asked to keep your head slightly elevated for a few days. If a drain has been inserted, it will be removed in a day or two following the operation. Dressing commonly is removed in a few days. A patient who was admitted to a hospital will be released in two to four days. Swelling and skin discoloration are common and usually will subside within a week or two. Many patients report a sense of tightness or numbness of the face and neck after surgery. The intensity of these conditions and how long they will last carries with the individual. Using cosmetic is permitted after the sutures have been removed. Exposure to the sun should be limited for a few months following surgery and accompanied by a sun screen with a high protection factor. - It is important to follow a careful plan on return to strenuous activity, in order to avoid tension on the wound (which could lead to worse scarring). - If you've had a drainage tube inserted, it will be removed one or two days after surgery. Bandages, when used, are usually removed after one to five days. Don't be surprised at the pale, bruised, and puffy face you see. Just keep in mind that in a few weeks you'll be looking normal. - Most of your stitches will be removed after about five days. Your scalp may take longer to heal, and the stitches or metal clips in your hairline could be left in a few days longer. - Your doctor may tell you to keep your head elevated and as still as possible for a couple of days after surgery, to keep the swelling down. - Avoid strenuous activity, including sex and heavy housework, for at least two weeks (walking and mild stretching are fine); avoid alcohol, steam baths, and saunas for several months. Above all, get plenty of rest and allow your body to spend its energy on healing.
Risk
Complications that can occur include hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin), injury to the nerves that control facial muscles (usually temporary), infection, and reactions to the anesthesia. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. Most of the incision is concealed and not noticeable. It is most likely to be heavy behind the ear where there is greater tension.
