Cheek Augmentation

High prominent cheekbones are one of the strongest hallmarks of beauty in our culture. They communicate a youthful, healthy look. A fullness of the cheeks indicates an abundance of healthy soft tissues and healthy fat under the skin.

Flat cheekbones can make a large nose look larger and a receding chin smaller. A deficient cheek structure can also make your face appear drawn and gaunt.  It may give the appearance of heaviness in the lower face and an aged look of the under eye area. The cheekbones are largely responsible for defining your face, highlighting the eyes and adding balance to your features.

The aesthetic enhancement that cheek augmentation can provide. The simplicity of cheek surgery and the relatively low cost of cheek implants make them an especially attractive cosmetic solution. Moreover, the recovery period after chin implants is relatively short with many patients resuming normal activities within a few days.

Cheek augmentation is a cosmetic surgical procedure that is intended to emphasize the cheeks on a person's face. To augment the cheeks, a plastic surgeon may place a solid implant over the cheekbone. Injections with the patients' own fat or a soft tissue filler are also popular. Rarely, various cuts to the zygomatic bone (cheekbone) may be performed.

About the Procedure

Preoperative Condition:
Cheek Bone Hypoplasia

Cheek Augmentations are placed to improve the prominence of the cheekbones and to create facial feature harmony after a trauma or to enhance genetically smaller cheekbones. Enhanced cheek contours.

The procedure is also performed to correct asymmetries and congenital defects (underdeveloped cheekbones). This is accomplished by the surgical implantation of a pliable synthetic implant that varies in size and shape for each patient's face. Your surgeon usually inserts cheek implant through an incision in the mouth and placed directly on the cheekbone.
General Anesthesia or Local Anesthesia.
Surgical Planning:
When cheek implants are being placed in conjunction with another cosmetic procedure, such as a facelift, forehead lift or eyelid surgery, the implants may be inserted through the incisions made for those procedures. Otherwise, an incision will be made either inside your upper lip or your lower eyelid. A pocket is then formed and an implant is inserted.
Surgical Procedure:
Cheek augmentations are generally completed utilizing an implant. Various sizes and thickness of implants are available to fit individual differences and desires. The implants are most often placed with the patient under sedation and utilizing local anesthesia. The approach is usually through the mouth so no skin incisions are necessary. Rarely are implants placed through a lower eyelid incision. The implants are placed through a tunnel, into a pocket under the soft tissues, and immediately overlying the cheek bones.
Duration Of Operation
Two days and one night
Most patients do not need to stay in the hospital overnight. One day admission is required in the case of General Anesthesia.
Prominent or high cheek bones are a sign of beauty. Cheek augmentation or malar augmentation can give you the high cheekbones you desire.
Road to Recovery:
The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people are back to work within a week or two. After surgery, a dressing will be applied to minimize discomfort and swelling. Special mouth wash should be used to preserve oral hygiene in case of an intraoral incision.
Bleeding is unusual. Infection is usually uncommon.

Preparation for Surgery

  • Send three photos via email or fax showing: the frontal, the lateral and oblique view. Use a dark or black background whilst shooting.
  • Inform us about any allergies, any serious medical conditions, and all medications you are taking, both prescription and non-prescription.
  • Avoid some medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, anti-inflammatory medications, etc. for two weeks prior to operation (talk to your local doctor).
  • Prepare yourself by being as fit and healthy as possible prior to the procedure. Check your blood pressure and cardiac status, e.g. EKG, especially those who are over forty years old.
  • Refrain from smoking and drinking alcohol two weeks before and four weeks after surgery.

Postoperative Care

Your plastic surgeon will provide you with instructions about post-operative care. There will be dietary restrictions as well as limitations to your activities. You should be aware that your ability to move your mouth and lips may be diminished temporarily. Stitches used to close the incisions inside your mouth usually dissolve within ten days. Patients are also advised to rinse their mouths with hydrogen peroxide after each meal for two to three days while the stitches are still in place.

There are usually no dressings. Initial swelling is usually moderate and gradually disappears over a month or two. Discomfort is mild to moderate and is controlled with oral medications. Sutures in the mouth dissolve and do not need to be removed. Sutures or staples in the scalp are removed in approximately seven to ten days.

You will experience some temporary swelling and bruising around the treated area. This can be minimized be applying cold compresses during the first twenty-four to forty-eight hours and keeping the head elevated while reclining. You may also feel tightness or numbness around the treated area which can make chewing difficult. Most people are able to walk about immediately following this procedure, but rest is recommended for the first day after surgery.

Patients are usually able to return to normal activities within a week, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks along with any other activities that may cause a rise in your blood pressure. Following chin and cheek augmentation, slight discomfort, aching, and some numbness along with swelling can be expected. All swelling is typically gone within six weeks.
